The Bike, Day 2
Before returning the bike at noon today, I road the "lower Charles Basin". I took Centre Street from our house (to Galen Street) to Watertown Square. Riding a bike thru the hairball that is Newton Corner was a lot of fun; not! From Watertown Square I did the south (Newton / Boston) side of the river to the Science Museum and then the north (Cambridge / Watertown) side back to Watertown Square.
All in all, I'd say I enjoyed the upper Charles ride yesterday better. The paths were in better shape and there were less people.
One might hope that the MDC learned not to plant Norway Maples and other trash trees with shallow roots sometime in the last 100 years. There are a whole bunch of them along the Sudbury Aqueduct (which borders our property). Unfortunately, they didn't learn and planted a whole bunch of them along Solders Field Road which have really screwed up the bike path.
Then there were the clueless people. I'm not sure which were worse - the women talking on their cell phones will walking their baby and / or dog and paying no attention to anything around them (hang up the the phone and enjoy the scenery!) or the couples so engrossed in each other that they were paying no attention to anything around them either (get a room or at least get off the bike path!). I'd heard horror stories of bikes competing with runners and in-line skaters along the Charles, but I had no problems with them. The runners and skaters generally paid attention and kept to the right. I dread to think what a bike ride along the Charles would be like after all the colleges are back in session and / or on a weekend!
Don't know why I'm being so bitchy. Maybe LJ makes it too easy to vent? All in all it was a fun 24 hours. Current Mood: bitchy
